Highly Sensitive People
Highly Sensitive People (HSPs)
Do you feel your emotions deeply? Are you sensitive to pain, bright lights, loud noises, or strong smells? Do you get easily overwhelmed when you have a lot to do in a short amount of time? Have you been viewed as shy? Have you been told you are “too sensitive?” You may be a Highly Sensitive Person.
There is research suggesting high sensitivity is an innate trait found in 15-20% of the population.
Unfortunately, this trait is frequently misunderstood and not traditionally valued in Western culture. Sensitive people often feel “something is wrong” with them because they have been shamed for their sensitivity. They are called “too sensitive,” inhibited, or fearful. Sensitive people have a higher likelihood of having low self-esteem.
As a highly sensitive person, you may have learned to hide the depth of your emotions or your propensity to become overwhelmed. You may be trying to be “normal” or fit in with “risk-takers,” a temperament trait highly prized in our society. These attempts to go against your intrinsic biology come at a cost: you feel exhausted and unfulfilled.
Therapy can help you heal this feeling that something is wrong with you. We shine at helping sensitive people improve their self-esteem and learn to work with their sensitivity, rather than fighting against it.
Your sensitivity is truly a gift. Through working together, we can help you come to embrace the beautiful parts of yourself that make you uniquely poised to live a rich, meaningful life.
