Trauma & PTSD
Trauma, or any experience where we feel physically or emotionally unsafe, can lead to many different emotions and symptoms.
What we often don’t recognize as trauma are smaller, chronic incidents of not feeling seen, understood, and validated in childhood.
Known as ‘relational trauma,’ these experiences can result in a multitude of difficulties in adolescence and adulthood, such as:
Anxiety and perfectionism
OCD and obsessive thinking patterns
Depression
Low self-esteem
Lack of trust in others
Difficulty finding and sustaining healthy intimate partnerships and/or friendships
Feeling emotionally reactive (“triggered) during interactions with your partner, your children, or friends without being able to pinpoint exactly why or knowing how to break the pattern
Often people shrink their lives to avoid getting triggered. The good news is: the effects of trauma are not set in stone. It can be treated and these patterns can be shifted.
At SageWell we have extensive experience working with trauma in all forms. Additionally, Dr. Harmeling is trained in Eye Movement and Desensitization Therapy (EMDR), a powerful somatic based trauma treatment with an extensive research backing.
The right treatment starts with a strong client-therapist relationship that feels safe. From there, we will work together to process and heal incidents from the past holding you back, so you can experience more joy and fulfillment in your life.
